A history of the town of Manchester, Vermont , 1860s.

A manuscript history of the town of Manchester in two parts written by Judge John S. Pettibone, probably in the 1860s. In Part One Pettibone writes of the early history of the town from it's settlement in 1763 through the Revolutionary War. Part Two consists of stories about the early settlers. The collection also includes an undated letter from Pettibone regarding Gideon Ormsby and other Revolutionary War incidents. There is also a letter from the donor of the manuscript, Mary C. Munson, giving information about it's provenance. A letter from Pettibone, addressed to Daniel Baldwin and dated July 13, 1869, was removed from MSA 490 and has been included in this collection. In it, Pettibone describes some early incidents that occurred in Manchester, Vermont when he was a child.

John Samuel Pettibone was born on May 18, 1786 in Manchester, Vermont, the son of Samuel and Rhoda (Bridgeman) Pettibone. He married Laura Graves of Rupert, Vermont on August 28, 1814. John S. Pettibone served in various offices including town representative, assistant judge, and probate judge. He also served on the Council of Safety. He died May 24, 1872.
